UTLEY'S INC: May 2011- Present
I fill a number of roles at this model shop where there's a fast paced environment yet still an exacting attention to detail. I split by time between mold making and model production. While in the mold department I mold and cast urethane, silicone and a number of other materials into platinum and tin based RTV. I advise on pattern making before the pieces come into the mold room to aid in the flow of work through the studio. We specialize in casting clear hollow bottles.
In the production department I have worked on a wide variety of projects fabricating models that include perfume bottle prototypes, store displays, electronics models, compacts, cosmetics packaging etc. I utilize all general shop tools in addition to lathe, NC programming and traditional milling, vacuum former and laser cutter.

ARNELL GROUP: May 2001 – July 2010
Working
within a team of designers and architects I fabricated a diverse range of
prototypes and scale models. Using plans, sketches, or even sometimes just a
concept, I helped the design staff make their ideas come to reality in 3-D. The
models were used for presentation purposes and as tools to help the design team
visualize or problem solve certain areas.
I
worked on a wide variety of projects such as: product prototypes (electronics,
drink bottles, cars, toy lizards, etc.) architectural models, study models, and
presentation models.
I
used a variety of methods to make working models including: mold making,
turning, woodworking, sculpting, laser cutting, vacuum forming, etc.
We
also worked with a team of architects to construct architectural models.
Projects included: retail store interiors, a nightclub, theme park competition,
and a sports arena. We used many materials including: wood, renshape, acrylic,
aluminum, styrene, high density foam, vivac, etc.
AVALON CUSTOM WOODWORKING: May 1997 – May 2002
In
this small high end custom woodworking studio I was the de facto shop manager.
I worked on all facets of the business, from consulting with clients and
drafting plans to building cabinets to finishing and installation. We
constructed projects such as: library cabinetry, fireplace mantles, kitchens,
entertainment units, built-in shelving etc. for commercial and residential
clients.
LEE WEITZMAN FURNITURE: October 1999 – September 2000
We built custom furniture from start to finish at this
modern furniture studio. We used various types of wood and wood veneers to
build furniture to custom specifications such as dressers, coffee tables,
mirrors, end tables, upholstered seating etc.
CLOCKWORK APPLE: April 1996 – August 1997
I
worked on all phases of model making in this detail oriented model shop. We
made props for television commercials and print advertisements using wood,
plastic, foam, aluminum, brass, fiberglass, etc.
MONTALBANO DEVELOPMENT: January 1995 – April 1996
I
fabricated models for this industrial design firm. I worked with the designers
and engineers to build working prototypes to tight tolerances. We made products
for the medical industry such as plasma separators and blood analyzing machines
as well as consumer electronics.
